Cultivating Healthy Posture with a Simple Restorative Pose Rerun

by Timothy

Poor posture is a common problem that people of any age can have but it is one that tends to worsen over time. Particularly common is the rounding of the upper back into a C-shaped curve, aka Slumpasana. People often hold their heads several inches forward of the body’s plumb line, which can lead to neck and upper back discomfort, among other problems. I’m just back from teaching workshops on therapeutic yoga at Kripalu and the Himalayan Institute and several of the people I worked with—some despite years of yoga practice—still had this postural habit. So I thought today I’d share with you a simple technique that in a number of cases has proved helpful for improving posture.

You might not think poor posture would be a factor is serious health problems, and we certainly weren’t taught much about it in medical school. But if you read medical textbooks and search out relevant studies, you will see that poor posture can contribute such problems as carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoporotic fractures, and even heart disease and depression. From a yogic perspective, this combination of slumping posture and the less-than-ideal breathing that accompanies it is also believed to contribute to anxiety, insomnia, digestive difficulties, etc.

When your back rounds, your lower ribs compress the top of the abdomen so it’s not possible to fully move your diaphragm, the major muscle of breathing, and take a full breath. As a result, people take shallow breaths, primarily bringing air into the upper parts of the lungs. Such a breathing pattern is not as efficient in bringing oxygen into the body, and more importantly for many health concerns, is agitating to the nervous system. I won’t go into the physiology here, but suffice it to say that I have repeatedly seen that improving your posture in a way that allows you to take slower, deeper breaths can lead to an improvement in overall health and well-being.

When you’ve had a long-term habit of slouching, however, it may not just be as simple as remembering to sit up straight or to pull you shoulders back when standing. Long-term slouching leads to shortening of muscles in the front of the upper body, as well as of the fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds and interpenetrates the muscles, and which can limit movement. It’s said that longer holds of poses are necessary to help lengthen the fascia, and while people differ on what the ideal holding time is, I believe staying in a pose for a few minutes may be ideal. That’s hard to do in most regular asana, particularly the backbends, which open up the back. The pose described below is a supported backbend, which like a regular backbend helps correct the postural problem, but because it’s restorative, it’s easy to stay long enough to have the desired effect on the fascia.

To do the pose, you’ll need one blanket and something to place under your head. Take a standard folded yoga blanket and unfold it once, so that you’ve got a long rectangle. Roll the blanket from the longer edge into a thin cylinder. Place the cylinder sideways on your mat a couple of feet from the head of the mat, sit in front of the blanket, and lie back so that rounded edge comes to your mid-thoracic spine.
Thoracic Spine, the portion of your spine to which your ribs attach—
between your cervical spine (neck) and lumbar spine
You can play with the placement, maybe a little higher or lower to get the region of your upper back that seems the most stubborn. Most people, particularly those who tend to slouch, need a pillow or folded blanket under the back of their heads, so that the chin can be more or less at the level of the forehead or slightly lower.
This photo uses a bolster in place of a rolled blanket, but you get the idea...
Once you’ve got your props in place, come to a supine Mountain pose with your back on the blanket roll, your head on the head support, and the tops of your shoulders on floor between the head support and the blanket roll. Now, take your arms out to your sides in a T-position, externally rotating your upper arms so your palms face the ceiling, which will help counteract the tendency of most slouchers to internally rotate them. Engage your leg muscles and lightly flex your feet. After  you’ve established your alignment, let go of all effort and lie back into this restorative backbend and let the blanket do all the work. Your only job is to remain mindful, trying to breathe slowly and deeply for the next several minutes. Titrate the time you stay to your comfort levels and schedule. For most people, I’d recommend starting with a minute or so then working up to 5-15 minutes a day. The longer you hold it (as long as you remain comfortable), and the more regularly you do it, the better the results!

Information About Healthy Eating Articles

By Georgia Diaz

Nobody can be totally perfect pertaining food issues unless one reads the healthy eating articles which are full of concrete information on body conditions. The articles narrate the way people need to check on the body conditions so as to live a normal life. The blogs systematically explains how the body gets provided with the essential nutrition diets and gives several options on how to keep check.

Maintaining a normal body condition requires one to set goals which are achievable. People fail to achieve their diet goals because they pop in action abruptly without taking in consideration some important feeding aspects. Like a race one has to start from a small pace and keep adding speed to the end until the desired results are seen.

How to achieve the plan is to start by small intake of a desired diet food. Priority here is to make the minded and body used to the food in that if the diet is not included one feels is failing to stick to the set goal. One can always try to work with checking on the color, variety and freshness of the diet.

Some physical activities are needed to keep the body metabolism high and this which keep your body active. During the exercise take enough water to keep the body hydrated and to reduce fatigue; thirst and hunger should not be confused as they are two different feelings. These two, exercise and water, should be at the top of the diet listing and be maintained there always.

Consuming too much does not mean all that food goes to use in the body as some of the stuff is unhealthy. The key point is to moderate the intake and keep a balance of the most valuable nutrients in the diet. Just like in chemistry try to balance the intake of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and fibre.

Do not go to the trouble of limiting the type of food one likes rather take in small percentage to keep the urge at per. Another option is to take huge amount during breakfast time and then taking smaller portion in the rest of the day. This makes sure there is no excess in the gut and all is used in the body metabolisms.

Consumption of food is a coordinated activity which does not involve the food alone but also the mental state of a person. When one decides to eat with friend, their appetites are increased and can eat just enough food. Also this practice makes sure the person chooses that type of food correctly and not just taking junk food in front of their friends.

Healthy eating articles are all about motives which are set to make sure the body is retained in it normal functioning conditions. Never at any time swallow food which is not chewed and before consuming to the full listen the body to learn it language. You should plan on how you are required to eat and also consider consuming balanced diet with all the the nutrients.

Staying Healthy In Utah

By Rey Vetangelo

It's time to get moving! Exercise is a key component to living a healthy, well-balanced life. The likelihood that you will need to have a lap band procedure, or weight loss surgery, decreases dramatically if you maintain a healthy exercise regimen.

Yoga should be relaxing but should also strengthen your body as well. The stretching and moving actually does several important things to your body. As you do balancing postures and focus on stretching you will find that your cardiovascular efficiency increases. Blood is spread much more equally around the body which opens up new doors to increasing your overall health.

But more and more people are coming to the realization that commercialized diets on the whole cannot be completely trusted. Most such diets enact weight loss within an individual because they take away a necessary component of human diets, whether it is carbohydrates, proteins, fats, or what have you.

Because these diets take away important food groups to total health, the body responds by burning the energy it needs to survive from its reserves, which can eventually be harmful to the body. During this time when the body is burning its reserve stores of energy, typically fat in the case of dieters, it is also not getting the proper amounts of nutrients that it needs to be fully functional and completely healthy.

Here are some great locations to get closer to Mother Nature and further away from bariatric surgery. The peak of Mount Timpanogos is one of the tallest in the entire state, with an elevation of 11,752 feet. Unless you are an experienced winter climber, it's best to hike this trail in the late spring, summer or early fall. The hike is about 14 miles round trip-so be prepared. Be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen.

Many chiropractors swear by yoga because of the increased strength of back and joints. Most exercises don't target these areas and some actually harm these areas of the body. Chiropractors are fans of the stretching as well as the balance postures that yoga presents.

While switching one's diet is a fundamental step to take towards achieving overall health in the body, so too is giving the body regular exercise. It should here be noted that regular exercise does not have to mean a gym membership or even an hour a day of working out at home.

When we are talking about the inner systems there are certain areas of the body that are directly targeted by yoga. Cholesterol, sodium, and glucose levels will decrease in the body and certain vitamins and minerals increase. This allows the body to function even better the next time.

On the whole, exercise is a great short-term and long-term benefit; you can feel better by enjoying the natural beauty of Utah with friends and family, while increasing your overall mood. You can also ward off serious chronic disease, which could result in a visit to Dr. Alfonso Preciado for lap band surgery, through regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight.

Dropping Excess Pounds Safely And Effectively Through Healthy Eating

By Kameal L. Anderson

The attainment of optimum health entails a lot of important matters. One of them is minding very carefully what goes into your mouth. Healthy eating is not only nourishing, but it also helps you look wonderful. That's because it involves the consumption of wholesome foods that are packed vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients. It also entails the elimination of anything bad for the body.

A lot of people who wish to slim down are tempted to take certain supplements. According to a lot of manufacturers, their offerings can help make your dream figure become a reality quickly and with minimal effort. With the help of attention-grabbing and sensationalized promotion, these products are catching the interest of many. It seems like these supplements are essential for optimum slimming down.

The problem with most of today's supplements is they don't really contain anything that promotes weight loss. With a little research on the internet, it's easy to realize that the stated ingredients and claims on the label and ads do not come with any scientific basis. Basically, you will be wasting your hard-earned cash on pills, capsules or powders that do nothing to help you slim down effectively.

Majority of fat burners, metabolism boosters and appetite suppressants around also contain questionable ingredients. These chemicals may cause side effects such as nausea and excessive sweating, and even dangerous ones such as heart palpitations and increased blood pressure. Especially if you have an existing medical condition, the intake of these supplements may actually put your health in danger.

Rather than get your hands on various supplements that are purported to help you shed off excess pounds, it's a better idea to simply focus your attention on healthy foods that are guaranteed to help you slim down, according to medical and fitness experts themselves. They are easier on your pocket than any pricey supplement. More importantly, they contain nothing that can endanger your life.

Adding fruits and veggies to your diet is a wonderful way to eliminate excess pounds that give your vital organs a hard time and also take away your self-esteem and confidence. Wholesome foods are packed with nutrients like vitamins and minerals. They are also excellent sources of antioxidants that protect the cells from free radicals. Antioxidants also help slow down the aging process.

Because they are certainly low in fat and calories, fruits and vegetables can help you slim down effectively. Their rich fiber content can save you from overeating because they make you feel full for a longer period of time. Adding protein to your diet is important too. When opting for animal-based protein, choose wisely. Some great examples are fish, chicken breast without the skin, and lean beef cuts.

It's also very important to exercise on a regular basis. The fact is you really don't have to get an expensive gym subscription. You may simple brisk walk, ride a bicycle, dance, swim or play volleyball with friends. Fitness professionals say that you should exercise for no less than 20 minutes. Also you should do it for at least 5 times a week. With proper eating and regular exercising, you will realize that taking supplements to slim down is unnecessary.

Meditation and Healthy Eating

by Nina
Cake and Photo by Brad Gibson (yeah, he bakes, too)

My friend Elizabeth told me that before I knew her she weighed 205 pounds, but that she was able to lose weight and keep it off by changing her eating habits. From my observations of people close to me who have weight problems and from what I’ve read, I understood how unusual this was. So I asked Elizabeth to share her story with us. Okay, fine, I admit it! I have an agenda. Because I know from our previous conversations that Elizabeth has a regular meditation practice as well as a regular yoga practice, and that she credits both with helping her stay focused on maintaining her healthy eating habits.

I also happen to be reading The Willpower Instinct by Kelley McGonigal, Ph.D. because I want to learn more about how to help people change their eating habits. That’s because—as I'm sure most of you know by now—maintaining a healthy weight and eating more nourishing foods is vital for healthy aging. And sure enough, in one of the early chapters in Dr. McGonigal’s book she tells us that one of the best ways to strengthen your self control (and don’t we all need that to help us resist the daily food temptations we’re exposed to, I mean, my own daughter is pastry chef!) is to meditate.

Here is what she says:

“Neuroscientists have discovered that when you ask the brain to meditate, it gets better not just at meditating, but at a wide range of self-control skills, including attention, focus, stress management, impulse control, and self awareness. People who meditate regularly aren’t just better at these things. Over time, their brains become finely tuned willpower machines. Regular meditators have more gray matter in the prefrontal cortex, as well as regions of the brain that support self-awareness."

And the good news is that it doesn’t take a lifetime of meditation to change the brain. Here’s another quote from The Willpower Instinct:

"One study found that just three hours of meditation practice led to improved attention and self control. The new meditators had increased neural connections between regions of the brain important for staying focused, ignoring distractions, and controlling impulses. Another study found that eight weeks of daily meditation practice led to increased self-awareness in everyday life, as well as increased gray matter in corresponding areas of the brain.

"It may seem incredible that incredible that our brains can reshape themselves so quickly, but meditation increases blood flow to the prefrontal cortex, in much the same way that lifting weights increases blood flow to your muscles The brain appears to adapt to exercise in the same way that muscles do, getting both bigger and faster in order to get better at what you ask of it."

I don’t know about you, but I find these results fascinating. Because while self control is important for healthy eating, it’s also helpful for many other ways of fostering of healthy aging, whether it is something you need to stop doing, such as smoking, or something you need to start, like exercising.

But enough about science! Let’s hear what Elizabeth says about putting theory into practice:
Nina: Can you tell us something about why you needed to change your eating habits?

Elizabeth: I was overweight (205 lbs) and unhealthy at 32. I also had Crohn's disease. The change started when I moved to California in 1999. Eventually, I lost 50 lbs and have kept it off for 12 years.

Nina: What changes were you able to make that led to the weight loss and helped you maintain it?

Elizabeth: I started by making small, realistic changes that I knew would be easy to maintain. For dietary changes, I started with milk. I went from regular to 2%, then 1%. If I had fat-I tried to make it a healthy one such as avocado or olive oil. I also created a cookbook of my favorite recipes, and revamped them so they are still flavorful but healthy. I'm a genius at the 30-minute healthy dinner. My favorite is Cuban Black Bean soup. I try to always make time in my day for exercise. If I couldn't go to the gym, I would make a point of taking the stairs or walking on my lunch break. I also changed my perspective by viewing eating healthy and exercising as a way to do something positive for myself, not something to dread. I have a nice variety of yoga and exercise DVDs at home, which is also very convenient.

Nina: What is your meditation practice like and how do you think it helps you maintain healthy eating habits?

Elizabeth: I practice Transcendental Meditation, which is typically done twice daily, for 20 minutes. I meditate in the morning—I feel it's a great start to my day. It helps me to get the rest and focus that I need. It also manages stress and helps me to be checked in with what's going on in my life. I'm more likely to defer my unhealthy snacks once I've checked in with myself.

Nina: What you said about meditation helping you get focus is very interesting. Kelly McGonigal says, “Meditation is not about getting rid of your thoughts; it’s learning not to get so lost in them you forget what your goal is.” So meditation is supposed to help you stay “focused” on your goals.

I know that you also practice yoga asana. Has this helped with you maintain healthy eating habits? If so, how?

Elizabeth: Yoga has been wonderful in many ways. I am more relaxed, have less back pain, and I am more aware of how I'm feeling. For example, for most of the time, when I'm hungry, I'm actually dehydrated or have low potassium. I'll have a glass of water and a banana and I'm fine. Yoga helps me to be quiet through an uncomfortable situation (there are many of those in my practice!). I've learned to just pay attention to my breath and it usually moves me through a situation feeling very safe and grounded.

Nina: What you just said is so important! I think self-awareness is vital for healthy eating. You need to learn, as you said, when you’re just dehydrated rather than hungry, when you’re full and should stop eating, and which foods make feel good rather than just tasting good. And the relationship between stress management and healthy eating is so key that you’ve given me an idea for a future post. Thank you so much, Lizzy!

Healthy Living for Fall with Ayurveda and Yoga

by Ram
Fern Leaves by Melina Meza
As you may have noticed, summer is gradually winding down and making way for autumn to take over. The days become shorter, the rhythm shifts, and the light and heat of summer subside. Both yoga and ayurveda stress the fact that we are in sync with our environment so we need to be mindful of the change in seasons. Thus, as seasons change, our body and mind adapt to these changes. This requires us to be aware of the qualities associated with the seasonal changes.

Fall is marked by the domination of vata dosha (constitution). Vata is made of the ether and air elements. It represents the mobile force of the universe, and in our bodies is responsible for all activities that involve movement. Thus, locomotion, digestion, circulation, respiration, elimination, communication, sensory and motor function, cardiac function and nervous system impulses (among others) are all governed by vata. Vata in the mind is responsible for emotions that include enthusiasm, joy, clarity, creativity, fear, worry and anxiety.

The qualities (gunas in Sanskrit) of ether and air elements in turn constitute the vata qualities, and these include cold, dry, light, rough, subtle, mobile and clear. To understand the vata dosha, it is important to understand whether the above-mentioned qualities are dominating the body and mind at any given moment. When vata dosha is healthy, these qualities are in a balanced state and the individual experiences optimal health, stability, creativity enthusiasm and excitement for life. The movements of the body are graceful, unimpeded, and yet controlled. Individuals who possess a balanced state of vata tend to be imaginative, energetic, fun, light hearted and full of excitement.

The fall season is characterized by a cold, windy and dry weather. Leaves change color and fall off the trees. During peak autumn, trees are devoid of leaves or flowers and look dry and barren. As our external environment changes, it increases vata in our own internal environment. If we are not aware of these changes, vata goes out of balance and so do the vata qualities and a totally different personality emerges.

In general, to balance vata, we learn to apply its opposite qualities to any given imbalance. Whether the tools used are lifestyle changes, dietary, herbal, colors, aromas, mantras or massage oils, the underlying principles used to return to balance are the same. It is necessary to increase the qualities opposed to the imbalance. Thus, we combat dryness by bringing in moisture. To counter an excess of lightness, we bring in heaviness, and if there is an excess of coldness, we increase heat. When vata dosha goes out of balance, the individual’s movements become erratic, the body becomes lighter and dryer and weight drops. The person may experience feeling of chillness/coldness throughout the day, the voice becomes too quick and out of context, there is an inability of the mind to focus, the eyes and mind may appear vacant and empty and there may be unexplained pain in the body. Irrespective of our doshic constitution, all individuals will experience these fall changes and need to pay attention to them. People of vata constitution, being more susceptible to the fall changes, should take every precaution to prevent vata from going out of balance. Some of the healthy living practices during the fall season include:

1. Stable Routines:
One of the most important lifestyle tools for maintaining health and for supporting healing during the fall season is adopting stable routines. Stability is greatly improved through all activities performed at the same time every day. The routine should include time for self hygiene, massage, meditation, physical exercise and/or yoga asana practice in addition to other daily activities, including but not limited to eating, sleeping and waking up. Meals should be taken regularly throughout the day and at the same time each day. All activities done at the same time each day helps to counteract the vata qualities. For example, if a vata person is experiencing increased dry quality in their body, we will encourage them to utilize moistening, warming and nourishing foods, remedies and practices.

2. Diet to Counteract the Fall/Vata Season: Cold sandwiches, cold salads, and dry cereals with cold milk should preferably be avoided during this season. Such foods can aggravate vata qualities during fall and create a vata imbalance. The food should be preferably cooked (warm), oily (moist) and moderately spiced (warm). Since vata is cold, dry and rough, warm cooked foods made with a little olive oil or ghee have a wonderful soothing effect that immediately calms down the restless vata. Warm drinks such as hot milk or ginger/cinnamon/basil tea also have an immediate balancing effect. Suggested snacks include vata tea with a wheat bread, dates, fresh fruit, or warm milk. Coffee and other caffeinated drinks can be vata aggravating and should be avoided. Sipping warm water and herbal teas throughout the day enhances warmth and hydration. Dinner could be a warm hearty soup and bread. Before bed a cup of warm milk with a pinch of ginger/cardamom and some sugar or honey is recommended for sound sleep.

3. Massage (Abhyanaga):
Fall brings dryness and lightness not only to plants but also to the body. To prevent excessive dryness it is a good idea to use oil both in food and on the body. Daily oil massage will not only treat dry skin but it will moisten the joints and tissues of the body as well keeping the body lubricated and healthy throughout the fall season. Warm sesame or almond oil with 1-2 drops of rosemary, lavender or jasmine essential oil is used for the body massage. Apply the oil all over and gently massage the body. If possible, keep the oil on the body as long as possible and do not wash it off. If you take a shower afterwards, do not use soap and pat yourself dry.

4. Yoga Asanas:
The emphasis throughout the fall season is to incorporate an asana practice that softens your lower abdominal cavity, and builds strength and stability in the body and mind. Practice at a slow, smooth and steady pace. Pay attention to detail and use gentle movements. Asanas that aid in pelvic compression and flexion of the hips (iliopsoas, rectus femoris, and adductors) are recommended. Hold each posture for a short amount of time, but do multiple repetitions. Draw into and move from your power center (core). This is the area below the navel and above the pubic bone. Focus on the foundation of the pose to create stability and focus on lengthening your inhalation. Stay connected to the earth. Ground down through your big toes. Engage your entire body by hugging your muscles to the bones. Do not overextend or deplete yourself. Your practice should be strengthening, not draining. If the vata imbalance is severe, a restorative practice is best. Stay warm and conclude your practice with a long relaxation.

5. Pranayama:
In India, pranayama is generally taught in the two seasons of transition, fall and spring. During the fall season, start the day with Nadi Shodana (alternate nostril breathing) to help to purify the bodily channels. A regular practice of pranayama during the fall season helps to tune our breath, body and mind (see Yoga and the Mind-Body Connection). Pranayma practices could include Alternate Nostril breathing, Ujjayi pranayama and Surya Bhedana (Sun-Piercing), which create balance by providing warmth and stability to the body and mind. (Timothy has already introduced us to the concept of Pranayama with his article on Bhramari Pranayama and he will be addressing other Pranayama practices as well.)

6. Meditation: Follow your pranayama practice with several minutes of mindfulness meditation. During the fall season and for the overactive vata mind, meditation is one of the best ways to be grounded and to find calm and stillness.

7. Other Activities:
Always stay warm. Wear clothing made with soft fabrics and earth colors (grounding energy). Get enough sleep. Enjoy regular, relaxing and peaceful walks in nature to calm the mobile body. Other great activities during this season include gardening, culinary activities, and creating art and music. Make sure all activities are followed with a sufficient rest period. Pay attention to the influences that you allow into your life—from the foods you eat to the amount of time you spend in front of a computer, cell phone or TV. As we get ready to welcome fall, let us experience perfect health, bliss and freedom every moment and throughout the season.

Healthy Spine Tips Offered By Trusted Kent WA Chiropractor

By Derick Scartel

The spine can have a major impact on a person's overall well-being and health. This is why it is important for people to take good care of this structure. A Kent chiropractic clinic can provide a wealth of helpful advice for keeping the spine properly aligned and functioning like it should.

Few people know how important strong abdominal muscles are to their spinal health. These muscles both oppose and support the spine. They help to limit the amount of stress that a person's spine is subjected to, especially when a person changes elevations, bends and lifts heavy objects or engages in any other physically challenging activity. Sadly, few people properly target this area when working out.

A chiropractor can show his or her clients how to complete exercises that target this muscle group. Although these activities are learned in-office, they can also be performed at home. When the core is sufficient strong for supporting the spine, physical strain that leads to minor back injuries can often be avoided.

Excess fat on the body could prove problematic. Spinal stress is far more common among sedentary, overweight individuals than it is among active people. The good news is that your provider can help you structure a weight loss plan that provides long-term benefits.

People who have poor thyroid functioning tend to struggle with weight loss. Dealing with nutrient deficiencies can improve how the metabolism operates. It is also good to have subluxations or misaligned vertebrae resolved. This will improve communication between the brain and the nerves as well as the functionality of both the metabolism and the immune system.

Having the spine regularly assessed can also be beneficial. This will allow chiropractors to identify subluxated areas and correct them. Achieving proper alignment will often allow people to enjoy far less day to day discomfort, higher energy levels and easier movements among other things.
