Key Information About MS Prevention

By Jerri Perry

Multiple Sclerosis, also known as MS, is the name of an inflammatory disease marked by damage of the insulating covers of the nerve cells in both the spinal cord and brain. The disease takes many different forms. Depending on who you ask, there may or may not be MS prevention. Professionals involved with conventional medicine believe there is no way to prevent the onset of this debilitating condition. However, holistic or naturopathic doctors may disagree.

Damage of the covers makes it more difficult for communication in the nervous system, resulting in a variety of bad symptoms and signs. The problems may be psychiatric, physical or mental. In relapsing forms the symptoms may be new and in progressive forms they may build with time. In-between the attacks, the signs and symptoms may disappear completely. There is usually still some permanent neurological damage done.

A lot of people think this disease and its attacks cannot be prevented. Those who have relapsing-remitting MS may use medicine as treatment to reduce the frequency of relapses and delay disability. There are some claims that this disease is caused by shock, vaccinations, injury or pregnancy. Still, not much scientific evidence is available for proof. If an individual has MS, the flu or any other viral infection can cause relapse.

Religious folks or those interested in natural healing may believe it can be prevented and even cured. Every individual is different and there is still so much research that has yet to be done on the disease. Whatever the case, there are natural remedies and conventional medicine that may be employed to reduce symptoms and signs for those who have already been diagnosed.

So far there are no solid leads regarding what causes this and so it has proven difficult to find a cure. Some think it is the destruction caused by the immune system or failure of cells that are responsible for producing myelin. MS may also be linked to genetics, environmental factors or a major infection. Usually MS is diagnosed by signs and symptoms present and a test is done to confirm the results.

There is not a cure for this disease, at least not one widely accepted. Treatments are meant to improve function following attacks and prevent new attacks. Medications are typically used for treatment, but people who want to test their natural healing may use herbs and other remedies. There are a lot of people choosing alternative treatment to battle this.

The outcome in the long term for these patients is difficult to predict. Still, the best results are usually seen in those who developed MS early on, people with relapsing course, women, and those with few attacks. Life expectancy is 5-10 years less than those unaffected by MS, which is one of the reasons many are interested in prevention.

MS prevention may or may not be possible, depending on who you ask. Most professionals who practice modern, conventional medicine believe that there is no way to prevent this inflammatory disease. Others believe that preventative measures cannot be taken. This disease has been different signs and symptoms, and manifests differently in every person.

The two glaucoma types are open angle and angle closure. Open angle might also be called wide angle. This is the form seen most often. It occurs when the structures within an eye look normal but fluid in the eye is not flowing properly through the trabecular meshwork, which is the drain for eyes. With angle closure, also known as chronic or acute or narrow angle, poor drainage is the main issue. This is less common in western regions than in Asia. The issue with drainage is caused by the angle between the cornea and iris being too narrow and blocking the iris. The result is sudden buildup of eye pressure.

Few, if any, symptoms are experienced with this condition. The first official sign is often the loss of peripheral or side vision. This might go unnoticed for a long period, which is why glaucoma may be called the sneak thief of vision. Early detection is crucial for saving vision.
